Dog Treats

Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits

How can I possibly tease my little babies with constant baking and cooking aromas wafting through my kitchen and not bake treats for them?  How can I not spoil the two who love me unconditionally, greet me with so much excitement, watch my every move and bring so many smiles and laughs to my day?

Biagio and Bella are sibling Chihuahuas.   Boy and girl, they are my pet versions of my son and daughter.  Really, their personalities almost match my children.  Biagio is quiet yet tough, always on guard, Bella is active, feisty and oh so feminine.   I smile just thinking of them.

These little pups love their treats!  And they would love to have lots of people food but do need to watch their figures.  Just as I have a hard time purchasing store bought desserts for myself, I’m always fretting over store bought dog treats.  For convenience reasons only, I buy their treats and as often as I can, I bake them my own.  This recipe is really easy with simple, basic ingredients.  The hardest part is the time in cutting out each little bone.  My babies are little so I use little cutters.  Obviously the bigger dogs can have bigger bones and the rolling and cutting would go a bit quicker.

p.s.  I apologize for the blurry photos;  Biagio snuck up to grab a treat just as I was about to take the picture!

Whole Wheat Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits

adapted from Three Dog Bakery

2 cups whole wheat flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 cup natural peanut butter

1 cup organic milk

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  In a large bowl combine flour and baking powder.  Mix in the peanut butter and milk, stirring well until combined. Place dough on a lightly floured surface and knead until soft.  Refrigerate dough for 1/2 hour.

Roll out dough to 1/4 inch thickness and cut out shapes.  Place on slipat or parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes or until lightly browned.  Cool on baking sheet then store in an airtight container.  Makes about 150 tiny bones!

I love being in the kitchen. Early mornings, soft music, a hot espresso. Easing into the preparation of delicious meals. Glancing through cookbooks, gathering inspiration and planning my day. I look forward to the cycles of the seasons, the pleasures of tasting and savoring and sharing this with those dear to me. Weekends are special to me as my week days are often rushed, but still I create the ambiance, light the candles, set the table and uncork the wine.
